ARTICLE: Assign and Administer Medication with Frequency 'As Required'

The Medications module is still the most popular and important extension module within Reach, and within this document we cover those moments when students are dispensed medication as required, this can occur when a prescription medication changes its status from requiring a schedule to the student using it as required. This setting change within the Reach, will change the medication to behave more like over-the-counter medication and will not appear in the scheduled medication listing of the dispensary.

Assign Medications with Frequency 'As Required'

Medicine categories, conditions, and medications are required to be set up within your school's Reach portal before they can be used in personal profiles and within the dispensary.
This is a simple process, for details please view this Article: How to setup Medicine Categories / Medication / Conditions.

Standard set up for a student's prescription medication requires setting the daily/weekly medication schedule, this item would then appear in the dispensary for action as required.
Details of this process are shown in the Guide: How to assign Medication to Students.

Prescription Medication that do not require a set schedule can utilise the 'As Required' setting in two ways;

First method, is when the medication setup is new for the student
  1. Ensure the medication is created in the system
  2. Open the required personal profile for the student and select the medical tab and then the medications tab
  3. Click the green New Prescription Medication button
  4. Select the required prescription medication
  5. Enter all details as required and select the 'As Required' Frequency
    1. There is no requirement to set a time with this frequency setting
  6. Click the Save Medication button and the Save button on the profile
Second method, is to change the prescription medication frequency setting once it has already been used in the dispensary
  1. Open the required personal profile for the student and select the medical tab and then the medications tab
  2. Click on the line item that is the required medication to change
  3. Click on Frequency and change the setting to 'As Required'
    1. There is no requirement to set a time with this frequency setting
  4. Click the Save Medication button and the Save button on the profile

Administer 'As Required' Medications

Once a Prescription Medication has the 'As Required' frequency setting in a student's personal profile, administering that medication is a quick and easy process via the dispensary
  1. Open the dispensary and click the Add As Required button at the top
  2. The Administer OTC Medication window will pop-up
  3. Select the required student
  4. Click the Medication field, any PMO items that have been set 'As Required' will show at the top of the listing
  5. Select the required item and enter the administer details as normally required
  6. Click the Administer button to save and close the window
  7. This action will create a medical report as does every action within the dispensary
